Project Shutdown

On October 8, 2011, the UP Medical Students for Social Responsibility-International Physicians for the Protection of Nuclear Warfare (MSSR-IPPNW) will be hosting Project Shutdown, an on-the-spot essay-writing and poster-making competition that gathers together junior and senior high school students from Metro Manila to participate in activities concerning the past and emerging problems on nuclear energy and weaponry and their applications in warfare. Endorsed by the Asian Medical Students’ Association Philippines (AMSA Philippines), the program aims to educate the youth about the current issues on movement for the prevention of nuclear war as well as to provide platforms of expression through the written language and the visual arts.

The chosen theme for the launch of Project Shutdown is ZERO IS THE ONLY OPTION, PREVENTION IS THE ONLY CURE. It is the battle cry of the supporters of the nuclear abolition movement. The events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during the Cold War and the succeeding crises in Chernobyl and Fukushima, among many, should be sufficient warning of the cataclysm that awaits humanity should triggers for the nuclear armament all over the world be set off for any particular reason. The campaign does not call for fewer nuclear weapons or for greater efforts to stop their spread; total elimination is the key because as long as they stay, the risk that nuclear arms will be used remains.

Both the essay-writing and poster-making contests are on the spot. On the day of the event, the rest of the delegation per registered school shall take part in educational activities that will promote further awareness on nuclear abolition while the contests are going on. Prizes will be given to the top-three ranking contestants of each contest.
