AMSA-Philippines Supports Dr. Pagaduan-Lopez's Nomination to the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture

A Letter of Support for Dr. June Pagaduan-Lopez

AMSA-Philippines, a non-stock, non-profit, non-government association of different organizations from various medical schools all over the Philippines and the representative of Filipino medical students in two of the biggest international medical student organizations in the world, hails and fully supports the nomination of Dr. June Pagaduan Lopez for membership in the United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT).

Dr. Pagaduan-Lopez is a psychiatrist and a professor at the University of the Philippines-Manila College of Medicine. Her dedication to the prevention of torture and victim’s rehabilitation is unparalleled for the promotion of human rights in the country.

The UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), composed of 25 members including the Philippines, has a preventive mandate of preventive approach in torture and ill-treatment particularly detention visits to all State parties, our country being one.

AMSA-Philippines believes that her presence  will be a great addition to the ranks of human rights champions in SPT. Election of members to the SPT will be held at UN Office in Geneva, Switzerland on October 25, 2012.
