Reaching Out, Despite the Circumstances

"Unity is strength. When there is team-work and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” - Mattie Stepanek

Last December 15, 2012, AMSA-UERM, together with the Red Cross- UERM chapter and UE Dentistry, organized its first medical-dental mission in Barangay Bagong Silangan, Fairview, Quezon City.

Prior to the mission itself, AMSA project heads Mads Bonifacio and I teamed up with the Red Cross heads, Angel Azucenas and Gail Lim, for the over-all preparation. We divided the volunteers to subcommittees, which planned and prepared the tarps, brochures, food, documentation, etc. During the day itself, due to unforeseen events, some things didn’t go as planned. However, with everyone's dedication to help other people, we were able to push through with our mission, utilizing whatever resources were available.

The team was assigned to different stations -- registration, vital signs, health education, and pharmacy. Others also assisted our partners from UE Dentristy. All-in-all, we were able to cater around 300 patients, 200 of whom had medical problems and 100 had dental problems. Despite the stress, seeing how many people were helped, the smiles on their faces, and hearing those two words “Thank you” made us remember why we were there in the first place.

I can’t wait for the next medical mission that AMSA-UERM will organize. I learned not only how to communicate with patients & how to carry out some procedures, but also how to be a team player, a good organizer and a leader-- a step closer to being the 5-star physician.
