Monday, June 9, 2014 Press Conference

AMSA Philippines together with HealthJustice Philippines, New Vois Association of the Philippines and the Running Priest Fr. Robert Reyes, made a statement concerning the Graphic Health Warnings Bill or RA 9211 amid fears of the bill being severely watered down in the bicameral meeting of the Senate and the House of Representatives scheduled this Monday and Tuesday. This statement was delivered by Erica Davillo (External Vice President) on behalf of AMSA Philippines in Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City on June 8, 2014.

The Graphic Health Warnings Bill will require tobacco companies to post health warnings and messages of more than 50% of the principal display area of their products. At least 63 countries have already implemented this bill. In ASEAN, only Myanmar and the Philippines who remain to have not passed this bill.

Four days ago, legislation has finally approved the inclusion of graphic images on cigarette packs with only the bicameral meeting as one of its last hurdles. However, there have been steps to decrease this to only 30% of the principal display area. As one association, we are strongly against this because it is imperative that we do not compromise our stand. Smoking has taken many lives directly and indirectly. Together, as one country, let us make our stand and help prevent these unnecessary deaths.
