Action for Economic Reforms (AER) partners with AMSA Philippines for its Sin Tax Law Campaign

by Johna Pauline O. Mandac (External Vice-President, AMSA Phil)

Last October 24, 2015, the Asian Medical Students' Association Philippines joined forces with civil society organizations, healthcare professional groups and government institutions in supporting a social media campaign led by Action for Economic Reforms (AER), which aims to recall the rationale of sin tax and to update the people about its benefits on the poor and the youth. AER is a research and advocacy non-governmental organization focused on Sin Tax Law, FOI, and other advocacies towards sustainable growth and people-centered governance.

AMSA Philippines is ONE with civil society organizations and healthcare professional groups in recognizing the merit of the Sin Tax Law. We recognize that the youth is a permanent target of tobacco companies for effective marketing of their products. We affirm that early exposure and experience in smoking will lead to higher probability of addiction and long-term tobacco consumption.

AMSA Philippines supports the Sin Tax Law, a health reform that significantly decreases the tobacco consumption of the youth, as evidenced by smoking prevalence surveys. We push for the improved awareness about the short and long-term effects of tobacco among the youth, thus promoting health-seeking behavior at the most critical stage of their lives!
